Sydney – Tim Tszyu revived his career momentum Wednesday night, earning a convincing unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Anthony Velazquez to return to winning form.
In the lead-up to the bout, the former WBO junior middleweight champion insisted he was no longer the fighter who had slid down the rankings following losses to Sebastian Fundora and a stunning upset defeat to Bakhram Murtazaliev. Inside the ring at the TikTok Entertainment Centre, Tszyu backed up that confidence with a composed and authoritative performance.
Now 26-3 with 18 knockouts, Tszyu looked revitalized under new trainer Pedro Diaz, displaying sharper timing and renewed confidence. He controlled the action behind a steady jab, mixed in uppercuts, and repeatedly broke through Velazquez’s guard with well-placed combinations to both the body and head. Tszyu won every round, showing patience and precision without the hesitation that had troubled him in recent outings.
Velazquez, a former NABF titleholder who entered the fight riding a strong run of activity, was quickly forced into unfamiliar territory. Though he absorbed sustained punishment and battled through a cut beneath his right eye, the American showed resilience and toughness, lasting the distance and denying Tszyu a stoppage.
The victory represents a crucial reset for Tszyu and positions him for renewed opportunities in 2026. His management team has already indicated that a return to the ring could come as early as the first quarter of next year as Tszyu begins his climb back toward world-title contention.
