Jose Resendiz Stuns Caleb Plant in Upset Split Decision Victory
At the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas, Caleb Plant (23-3, 14 KOs) suffered a surprising setback Saturday night, losing a split decision to hard-charging underdog Jose Armando Resendiz (16-2, 11 KOs) in the main event. The relentless pressure from Resendiz proved too much, as he wore down the former champion over 12 grueling rounds to claim the interim WBA super middleweight title.
Plant started strong, controlling the early action with quick jabs and movement. But as the fight wore on, his offense became too sporadic — mostly single shots with no sustained combinations — allowing Resendiz to steadily build momentum.
By the later rounds, Plant’s corner urged him to dig deep, but he couldn’t match Resendiz’s pace. Whether it was fatigue or frustration, Plant simply couldn’t keep the aggressive Mexican fighter off him.
Resendiz, who entered the bout a massive +1100 underdog, outlanded Plant 186 to 108 and finished the stronger fighter. Judges scored the bout 116-112, 115-113 for Resendiz, and 116-112 for Plant.
“I knew everyone counted me out,” Resendiz said afterward. “But I believed in myself.”
The upset drew comparisons to Andy Ruiz’s shocking 2019 knockout of Anthony Joshua — and marks a major shake-up in the super middleweight division.
Jermall Charlo Dominates LaManna in Return, Scores Fifth-Round Stoppage
Jermall Charlo (34-0, 23 KOs) made a dominant return to the ring Saturday night, stopping Thomas LaManna (39-6-1, 18 KOs) after five one-sided rounds. Fighting for the first time since November 2023 — and just his third bout since 2020 — Charlo showed little rust, dropping LaManna three times before the ringside doctor halted the fight before round six.
Charlo’s jab quickly bruised up LaManna’s face, setting the tone early. He patiently stalked his opponent, landing heavy shots and scoring knockdowns in rounds three and four. A stiff jab in the final seconds of the fifth left LaManna wobbled. When he struggled to steady himself in the corner, the ringside physician called a halt to the bout.
It was a sharp and punishing performance from Charlo, who reminded fans why he remains a force in the middleweight division.
