Deontay Wilder made a statement in his comeback fight Friday night, stopping journeyman Tyrrell Herndon in the seventh round at Charles Koch Arena. The former heavyweight champ closed the show at 2:16 in the round, snapping a rough stretch where he’d dropped three of his last four bouts.
This was Wilder’s first time back in the ring since a brutal knockout loss to Zhilei Zhang in June 2024. Now 39, he admitted the road back wasn’t easy.
“I needed time to rebuild — mentally, physically, emotionally,” Wilder (44-4-1, 43 KOs) said after the win. “It’s been a journey, but it feels good to be back. I know I didn’t give the crowd everything they wanted tonight, but I’m only going to improve from here.”
Deontay Wilder showed flashes of his old power Friday night, flooring Tyrrell Herndon in the second round with a sweeping left hook that caught Herndon off balance. Though Herndon quickly got to his feet and appeared unfazed, the early knockdown set the tone for the rest of the fight.
As the rounds wore on, Herndon struggled to mount any real offense. Wilder, sensing the opening, began to press forward with more urgency. By Round 5, the former champ was charging in, launching wild, looping punches that lacked finesse but carried serious force.
Round 6 saw Wilder ramp up the pressure against a visibly gassed Herndon, who was clearly having trouble dealing with Wilder’s size and aggression. A flurry of punches sent Herndon to the canvas once more, and by Round 7, the writing was on the wall.
Wilder ended the night emphatically, driving a clean straight right through Herndon’s guard. With Herndon no longer defending himself or responding, the referee stepped in to wave it off—giving Wilder a much-needed win and a shot of momentum as he eyes the next chapter in his career.
